Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common problem involving the wrists and hands. Symptoms include tingling, numbness, and weakness in the thumb, index or middle finger.
The carpal tunnel is a fibrous band of tissue found on the front side of the wrist (where a watchband would sit). It holds many of the tendons, nerves, and blood vessels that are required to operate your hand. CTS can occur if the carpal tunnel is damaged (where pressure is placed on the nerves and arteries). Typically symptoms worsen over time. CTS may include pain in the wrist or hand and often occurs at night, weakness of the hand, and muscle loss in the palm of the hand. Rather than treating CTS with anti-inflammatory drugs or surgery, chiropractic offers a more conservative approach beginning with joint manipulation or mobilization. This treatment helps the joints in the wrists to move freely. Other treatment options offered by chiropractors include soft tissue treatments that release muscle tension, exercises designed to minimize muscle strain and increase muscle strength, nutritional support, and suggestions on modifying the work environment to prevent over use.
